On November 1st, we celebrate the 158th anniversary of the World Ecology and Ecologist Day. This day is meant to remind people of the significance of knowing and valuing the relationships that exist between living beings and their environment and to raise awareness among our society about the importance of maintaining a harmonious relationship with our environment.
What is ecology?
Ecology is the study of the relationships between living organisms, including humans, and their physical environment; it seeks to understand connections between plants and animals and the world around them. Ecology helps us improve our environment, manage natural resources, and protect public health.
We celebrate our Ecologist Andrew Partin.
Andrew Partin works as Jackson County Vector Control District’s own vector ecologist. Vector Ecology is the science devoted to studying insects that transmit pathogens, their contact with humans, and their interaction with disease-causing organisms. One of Andrew’s favorite things about his job is the variety it affords him in the lab and field, but his work primarily involves monitoring and studying our local mosquito and tick populations. He also conducts the District’s RT-PCR testing of mosquitoes for vector-borne diseases!
